The Spirit of Pine Valley

A Unique Community Living with Nature

Letter from Pine Valley Neighbors President Diana Judson – July 13, 2025

Hi Pine Valley Neighbors!                                                                                                7/13/2025

Sorry this follow up letter is so late, but I was dreading doing this with one finger on my left hand!  I fractured my left ring finger about a week ago and am headed into surgery next week to fix it… so this is taking a lot longer to write up than before!!

NEW MEMBERS
We had a very productive meeting on 6/28/2025, there were lots of people in attendance and a hopefully some new members will join us!

Anni Schaeffer (Herring), our new secretary did a fabulous job as her first day as secretary and provided you all some great details on what was discussed at the meeting.  I would like to elaborate a little further on a few points that she mentioned.

MOSQUITO BITS AND DUNKS
A member mentioned the problem with standing water and it being a potential breeding ground for mosquitos.  Birdbaths, pot saucers, water troughs..any non-moving water may be a likely mosquito breeding ground.  A product that we found very helpful is Mosquito Bits and Mosquito Dunks.  I have included a number of photos of the products.  We use the Bits weekly in the pot saucers, and if you look closely at the photo of the animal drinking pond that we have in our front yard, we have secured a Dunk pod to an anchor in the center. The dunks last about 30 days, and the Bits about a week. They are safe for fish and animals, but not for the hatching mosquito larvae!  It is available at any hardware store.  I got mine on Amazon.

CATTLE CONTACT INFORMATION SHEET
Steve Fiedler asked me to share the RANCHER contact information with all of you, so that you can DIRECTLY report any cow sightings!  I have prepared the attached Cow Protocol Notice, that you can print and put on a garage freezer or bulletin board at your home.  I also put this info on my phone, and used it to report a cow and baby calf wandering on Jack’s Canyon Road a few weeks back.  It’s a lot easier on Steve if you would simply report these sightings directly, as you have direct firsthand knowledge of their location that you can report directly to the rancher or his wife, than coming from Steve third hand.

Call Steve if you know that they entered Pine Valley through a breached or down community fence and where the breach might be, so he can organize a crew to effect fence repairs.  If the fence is down on private property, then this is the responsibility of the property owner to repair.

TAYLOR WASTE GARBAGE UPDATE
We are down to about 39 homes left on Waste Management!  This is incredible news!  With your help, we can make some significant headway and eliminate TWO big noisy trucks coming into our development each week!  If you divide Pine Valley in half, from Ridgecrest East – here is how it breaks down:
Essentially, we have about 11 homes still on Waste Management in East Pine Valley & about 28 homes in West Pine Valley.  For those of you living around Valley Vista Road, you only have to convert 11 neighbors, and there will be NO more duplication of garbage trucks coming up Valley Vista twice per week!  We are nearly clear on Mountain Road!  Sedona road is clear!  I am attaching a spreadsheet by street, with names/addresses of Waste Management customers.  Can you help convert them if you know any of these folks?  I am including the following attachments that you can print out and hand to a neighbor, so help facilitate this process:

  1. Taylor Waste Pine Valley Flyer – this document was given to me by Taylor Waste – this offers two free months to anyone that converts!  WM FLYER
  2. Waste Management Contact Phone Number – this gives them a direct line to contact Waste Management to cancel service AND it advises them to mention YOUR name to Taylor when they sign up to get an additional month free (three months!) and you will get a month free for your referral!
WM CONTACT NUMBER AND INFORMATION >
  3. Waste Management vs Taylor Pricing Comparison – This explains all the products, services and prices offered by both companies, and also spells out the pricing that all residents will receive once we are fully converted over to Taylor CLICK HERE >
  4. Waste Management Customers – check this list!  Do you know any of these people?  Print out the attachments and have a visit and can you help get them converted over to Taylor?  Waste Management picks up on Wednesdays,  When you are out on your morning walk, check who is still using WM, and if you know them, let them know about the discounts and savings we have set up with Taylor exclusively for PV residents! 5. Print items 1, 2 & 3 to hand out to WM residents.
Item 4 – is for you to help to identify WM customers.

You will get another email on this in September. This is just a heads up for you.

  • PVN will provide hotdogs, burgers and softdrinks.
  • Bring a side dish to share.

A member suggested an annual Pine Valley Garden Tour to give residents gardening & design ideas. We should discuss this further at the party. It really sounded like a fun idea!

UNITED STATES FOREST SERVICE UPDATE:

PVN is in need of someone to oversee the harvesting of dead trees and brush around our community and along Jack’s Canyon Road.  We have many folks who said they would help, but we need a team lead or a group of leaders, who can put together a fall work crew, schedule teams to harvest, collect and stack cords of dead wood.  We FINALLY have permission to make a DIFFERENCE and get RID of those dead trees that are an unsightly fire threat to our beautiful community!

Here’s what we know:
In order to harvest this wood, you need to obtain a permit, which costs a minimum of $20.00 and will allow a resident to collect up to 4 cords of wood for non-commercial personal use.  Permits can be obtained at the ranger station on Hwy 179.  Permits expire at the end of the year.

  • PVN has agreed at our 6/28/25 meeting to reimburse the first 10 PVN members that request it, for the cost of this permit.   It is our hope that this will simulate obtaining a permit among residents, and stimulate dead tree collection.
  • If you are a PVN member and wish to obtain reimbursement for a $20.00 – 2025 wood collection permit, send your permit receipt to our treasurer Chris Kay at his email:  chriskay98@yahoo.com

and what we need:
I think if we can coordinate a community-wide effort we will be much more effective in our approach to this task.  Many hands make lighter work!
We need a team leader or leaders to coordinate the harvesting of these dead trees:

  • Set up initial meeting to go over game plan.
  • Discuss how, when, where.
  • Discuss recommended attire and safety: Clothing (boots, long pants and shirts, gloves, hats) water, bug spray, first aid kit..etc.
  • Discuss tools, transportation, – how is the wood to be cut & hauled away?  Who has tools, such as electric chainsaws which are permitted during stage 2 fire restrictions, which is what we are under as of this writing.  However, in the fall, fire restrictions may be lifted and regular gas-powered chainsaws may be used.
  • Where is the wood to be stacked and labeled temporarily for general resident collection?  I was thinking by the turnout by the Welcome to Pine Valley sign??
  • Who needs the wood?  Are they able to get it, or do they need it home delivered if they are senior citizens, or lack transportation.
  • What is the game plan if we have too much wood, and not so many takers this fall?  We need to think about hauling it away to the dump lacking any other place to put it.  Or maybe we bring in a dumpster for this dead wood?
  • I think we could perhaps try a small area in the USFS, make a concerted joint effort and see what works and what doesn’t work.  Baby steps and learn as we go!

Is anyone willing to step up to organize a community-wide effort?  I will help you get the word out to everyone via signs and emails to PVN members – to announce your meeting dates/times and locations. We have obtained a permit.  We have both an electric chainsaw, AND a gas chainsaw, tools, saws, cutters and a truck to haul the wood out.  We will definitely help, but I just cannot take on leadership of this effort in addition to all else I have going on, broken finger notwithstanding!

If you would like to orchestrate this effort, BLESS YOU!!  Please text me at 702-521-3366 and let’s get together to discuss a plan!

That’s all for now!  LOTS to think about!

Sincerely,

Diana Judson
